Dr. Sergio Bonini (July 22, 1947) is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Second University of Naples, Italy. He is also member of the AIFA Research & Development Commission.
Prof. Bonini was educated at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", where he received his M.D. degree in 1971. He is board certified in Gastroenterology (1973), in Allergology and Clinical Immunology (1972) and Internal Medicine (1984).
Prof. Bonini began academic career in the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1975. In 1988 he was appointed, by the Second University of Naples, Associate Professor of Rheumatology (1988-1991) and then of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (1991-). Since 1977 he has been part of the Faculty of Postgraduate Schools of Rheumatology and Allergology and Clinical Immunology. In 2001 Professor Bonini qualified for Full Professorship of Medicine.

Research areas of interest for Prof. Bonini include allergic and autoimmune diseases with studies on autoantibodies, IgE, allergens, mechanisms of allergic inflammation, genetics of atopy. Recent research has mainly dealt with allergic eye disease as a model of allergic and eosinophilic inflammation. Current studies are focussed on neural (Nerve Growth Factor) and endocrine (Sex hormones) modulation of allergic inflammation as well as on relationships between allergy and environmental factors (infections, smoking, sports). Since 1996 S. Bonini has a research appointment at the Department of Experimental Medicine now Institute of Neurobiology and Molecular Medicine, Italian National Research Council (CNR) for studies on "Modulation of allergic inflammation". He is Allergic Consultant at the Institute of Sports Medicine, Italian National Olympic Committee, CONI, Rome. Scientific production of Prof. Bonini includes approx. 500 scientific articles, chapters of books, proceedings of international congresses (more than 150 indexed by ISI medline). The most cited results among those published by him and his research group include the original description of a late-phase reaction in the eye, the first report on the potential relevance of NGF in allergic inflammation and tissue remodelling, the description of genetic and environmental factors influencing allergy phenotypes (IgE, basophil histamine release, inflammatory cells’ functions, tissue hyperreactivity).

Prof. Bonini has been President (1998-2001) of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (Secretary General 1986-1998). He is member of several national and international scientific societies and Honorary member of the Rumenian Academy of Sciences and of the Argentinian, Belgian and Hungarian societies of allergology and clinical immunology and, at present, member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Societies of Immunology, Clinical Immunology and Allergology. He has been part of several international (WHO, IAACI-WAO, EAACI, AAAAI) and national (Ministry of Health) expert board panels.
Editorial board member and/or referee of several allergy journals, he has a wide experience in congress organization.

Professor Bonini is married with Paola Rumi and has one son (Matteo, 1978), M.D.
