Dr. Jean Bousquet is a Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Montpellier in France. He received his medical degree and doctorate in pharmacy completed graduate training in Allergology and Thoracic Medicine at the Montpellier University Hospital.

For many years, Professor Bousquet’s research was focused on Mediterranean allergens and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Subsequently, he became interested in asthma research, particularly in demonstrating the role of inflammation as related to disease severity.   He proposed the concept of airways remodeling in asthma, which became a focus for research. He also studies the relationship between asthma and rhinitis as co-morbidities, particularly in severely affected patients. He now focuses on severe asthma.

For 13 years, Dr. Bousquet was Director of the INSERM Laboratory for the Immunopathology of Asthma and also held the position of President of the Societé Française d’Allergologie et d’Immunologie Clinique. He is recognized as past chairman of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) and as  founder and Chairman of ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma), in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

In addition to a teaching position in Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine at the Montpellier University, Dr. Bousquet is Chairman of the WHO Global Alliance Against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD), Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Asthma and Rhinitis in Montpellier, and Vice-President of the European Union-funded Network of Excellence GA2LEN (Global Allergy and Asthma European Network).

Professor Bousquet has edited and authored numerous publications, including 10 books and over 525 peer-reviewed papers. He served as editor of The European Respiratory Review from 1998 to 2002 and is presently serving as Editor-in-Chief of Allergy. He is or has been a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Clinical Experimental Allergy, Allergy Clinical Immunology International, Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology, and International Allergology.
